CHARLEY HARPER

Charley Harper (1922-2007) was an American Modernist artist, that left an indelible legacy on the art world . Best know for his highly stylized wildlife prints, posters, and book illustrations. He grew up on the family farm in West Virginia and made his way to the Art Academy of Cincinnati. There  he met his wife, fellow artist Edie McKee and they were married in 1947. They travelled the United States seeking out inspiration and opportunities. Eventually landing back at the art institute, Charley became an instructor.  He created multiple works for several wild-life organizations and designed interpretive displays for Everglades National Park.

He once said: " When I look at a wildlife or nature subject, I don't just see feathers in the wings. I see exciting shapes, colour combinations, patterns, textures, fascinating behavior, and endless possibilities for making interesting pictures.I regard the picture as an eco-system in which all the elements are interrelated, interdependent, perfectly balanced, without trimming or utilizing parts.: and herein lies the lure of painting: in a world of chaos, the picture is one small rectangle in which the artist can create an ordered universe."
